Plants vs Zombies

If you somehow haven't heard of Plants vs Zombies by now, you're in for a real treat. Sure, it doesn't sound very manly, but it's surprisingly fun having vicious plants protect your house from brain eating zombies. Plus, it's a great starter game to get your girlfriend/wife into videos games. Really, she'll like it. How can she not like it when the tag line is 'Get Ready to Soil your Plants!'

You collect sunlight to harvest enough energy to grow numerous species of zombie killing plants. You're only allowed a certain amount of plants per level, so choose wisely according to the types of zombies you see approaching! 'Normal' zombies are easy to kill, but others are much tougher with special abilities that you'll have to counter. A pole-vaulting zombie? Yup. Zombie on a zamboni? Why not. However my favorite is the 'disco Stu' dancing zombie. Beware his backup dancers!

So what's the story with Plants vs Zombies? Well you're trapped in your house with only these incredibly plants to defend with. First the zombies try to cross your front lawn, then the back yard (even through your pool!), then at night (scary and challenging), even through thunderstorms. Eventually they try sneaking over the roof and only an expert plant cultivator will fend them off, prompting the 'boss Zombie', Dr. Zomboss to make an appearance you won't soon forget!

Atom Zombie Smasher

This indie game has already scored with a catchy title. Atom Zombie Smasher is a pixelated view of the undead apocalypse. You are in charge of the military efforts to save a country being overrun with Zeds. The 'world map' view shows you territories and their level of infection. Each turn you can use available mercenary teams to chopper into a territory and save as many people as possible.

At that point the 'city map' is loaded and you deploy your different mercenary teams right before the zombies arrive. They try to fight off the walking dead as the chopper lands at your designated locations to lift people to safety. Try not to get overrun! Zombies infect people who of course turn into more zombies. When night falls, zombies pour into the city from every direction, so be fast!

If you rescue a certain number of people before they're all killed then you 'win' that territory and collect points. The zombies also get points from infections and number of territories controlled. As points accumulate for both sides different events and abilities are unlocked, which ramps up the challenge and fun. Either side can reach the limit for the campaign to win ultimate victory.
